Cosmetics with prebiotics: everything you need to know about the new trend

Today, almost each of us knows about the existence of intestinal microflora and how to keep it normal. But there is a special combination of bacteria not only inside our body, but also outside - we are talking about the microbiome of human skin. What it is, how it affects our appearance and how to manage it all - we will tell you below.

What is the skin microbiome?

The skin microbiome is an incredibly exciting new field of scientific research that is changing everything we previously knew about humans. Previously, scientists believed that we consisted only of cells and organs. Now they have discovered a new system that is vital to our existence. Microbiome is a special ecosystem of microorganisms that live on and inside our body. The skin microbiome can be compared to fingerprints - each person is unique and consists of bacteria that affect everything - from the intestines to the immune system. Our skin is no exception. We inherit a special microbiome from our mothers. But over time it changes depending on lifestyle, age and environment. Today, the study of the skin microbiome is one of the most popular areas in dermatology, since research in this area can have a significant impact on the beauty industry. Research proves that the presence of bacteria on the skin is very important and beneficial for us. They protect the skin from allergens, external irritants and oxidative stress.

How the skin microbiome affects its appearance

It is important to understand: if the bacteria on the skin are bad, the skin itself is bad. Rashes, increased sensitivity, uneven tone, dryness - all these conditions can be directly related to dysfunction of the microbiome. Its condition is negatively affected by aggressive cleansing, the use of antiseptics such as triclosan and chlorhexidine, intensive care with retinoids, acids (including L-ascorbic acid), excessive sun exposure and environmental pollution. The skin microflora is also harmed by a large number of skin care products that we use daily - complex multi-stage care often causes skin reactivity (inflammation). This is confirmed by facts: the highest rate of skin sensitivity is in Korea, the country where the 10-step care system came to us.

The cosmetic industry now offers three classes of drugs aimed at working with the microbiome. Prebiotics are a nutrient medium for “good” bacteria, probiotics are the bacteria themselves, disassembled into particles, which also feed friendly microflora, and live bacteria, for which there are still very few preparations, since it is quite difficult to keep them intact. One of the principles of action of cosmetics with prebiotics is the replacement of pathogenic (harmful) microflora. Thanks to this, “good” microorganisms grow quickly and confidently, displacing “bad” ones. This works well in the treatment of acne, rosacea, inflamed sensitive skin, rosacea and after traumatic procedures. But there is a nuance: if the skin has been exposed to aggressive influences, the bacteria must be allowed to “grow” for 2-3 months - and during this time, strong drugs will have to be excluded from the care.

Dermatologists are confident that probiotics can not only moisturize the skin and even out the tone, but also relieve it from more serious problems: eczema, acne and redness. The word “probiotics” on the packaging does not mean that there are live bacteria inside the cosmetic product: microorganisms are extremely unstable, and moreover, they do not get along with preservatives that are added to cosmetics. Products with probiotics contain inactivated microorganisms, fragments of their DNA and empty cell membranes, enzymes of lacto- and bifidobacteria. All these components have a softening and moisturizing effect and reduce irritation.

How do probiotics affect the skin microbiome?

So, we have found out that cosmetic products cannot contain living organisms, so here “probiotics” are substances (bacteria) that optimize and restore the balance of the skin microbiome. They are really capable of increasing the protective function of the skin and local immunity.

The main task of probiotics in cosmetics is to increase the protective function of the skin. They enrich the microbiome, and thanks to such “good” bacteria, the skin more effectively fights the effects of external aggressive factors. Some bacteria have an antioxidant effect and have a moisturizing effect.

It is not recommended to combine cosmetics containing probiotics with other products. Active components such as acids, retinol, alcohol can negatively affect the skin microbiome. The result of the combined use of probiotic cosmetics with products containing other active ingredients cannot be predicted.

Selection of release form

Treatments with beneficial microorganisms are available in different forms:

  • creams;
  • serums;
  • emulsions;
  • tonics;
  • masks.

The choice of a specific product depends on the desired result or specific needs of the skin.

It would be ideal if you can buy the entire line of probiotic cosmetics for comprehensive care. This will allow you to achieve results in a short time.

Be sure to consider what skin type the cosmetic product is designed for. Creams for dry skin are more nourishing, for oily skin they are light and non-comedogenic.

Try to regularly use toner, serum or emulsion. They will help to moisturize the surface even better and quickly restore the balance of beneficial microbacteria.

Products that restore the skin microbiome

Not long ago, a French cosmetic brand released a cream with retinaldehyde, which acts 11 times faster than retinol and restores a healthy skin microbiome. However, for pre- and probiotics to work effectively, you need to prepare your skin for their use by creating the correct pH level. That’s why it’s better to use products such as REVILINE® pH balance tonic . It restores the acid-base balance of the facial skin thanks to the innovative peptide Rubixyl®, which helps the skin in the fight against everyday stress. The pH balance toner helps restore the acid-base balance of the facial skin to optimal levels and significantly increases the skin's resistance to various stress influences, smooths out wrinkles and improves complexion.

So, to summarize all that has been said: research into the microbiome and knowledge of what is beneficial for it and what is not, has become the impetus for the popularization of caring for the skin, the creation of laconic care programs and the emergence of cosmetics with delicate, minimalistic formulas and probiotics in composition. The latter serve as a breeding ground for the development of “good” bacteria and, as a result, solve many cosmetic problems. In particular, they help cope with sensitivity and dryness of the skin, and get rid of a variety of skin diseases, including acne and rosacea. Now you know everything about the soldiers of the invisible front, and therefore your skin care will become even more thoughtful.

Net-Apax Prebiotic Cleanser (Ax1)

First, I will explain what the code on each Meder Beauty Science product means. In this case - Ax1.

The letters are the abbreviated name of the product, the number is the stage in the care. Cleansing is always the first step, which is why in this case we see the number 1 on the bottle.

In my opinion this is a brilliant idea. Even a beginner will definitely not confuse what to apply in what order. And the cosmetologist is calm.

Net-Apax cream-gel is a cleanser with the prebiotic BioEcolia®, its composition is called ALPHA-GLUCAN OLIGOSACCHARIDE.

This product is based on the micellar cleansing principle, that is, it very delicately removes makeup and impurities using micelles, making it ideal for sensitive and damaged skin.

For whom

I love this product very much, I use it myself because I have sensitive skin, and I prescribe it for my clients with sensitive facial skin, damaged skin and rosacea.

However, Ax1 can also be used to cleanse resistant skin, that is, skin with normal sensitivity.

You can include this product in your winter routine if you notice dryness and tightness of your skin after washing your face. Or use it as a preventative with prebiotics to give your microbes a little boost.

Flaws

This is a very light gel-cream with a pleasant consistency. But like almost all cleansing emulsions, Net-Apax does not cope with makeup very quickly.

How to use

If there is no makeup, it is enough to wash your face with this product once.

If you have active makeup, once, as a rule, is not enough. There may be some foundation left on your face, so in such cases I recommend cleansing your skin in two stages.

Or first remove makeup, for example using micellar water, and then wash with cream gel. Or use Net-Apax twice, that is, wash your face twice and then your skin will be perfectly clean, but not dry.

5. ESPA Tri-Active Advanced ProBiome Eye Cream

An eye cream that should smooth out wrinkles, strengthen skin protection, make eyelid skin more elastic, and eliminate puffiness and dark circles. The set includes a cute spatula-massager, which is convenient for scooping up and distributing the cream.
