You know what primers are. You know what facial oil is. But what happens when you mix them together? No, it's not complete chaos. Instead, it's actually a wonderful hybrid that hydrates and primes skin for your perfect makeup look—or undone look, because we know you can use it too!
Oil primer for the face is not that new! They may have gained attention recently, but they've been in makeup bags for years. Basically, primer oils are lightweight facial oils that are designed to provide the hydration needed to prepare the skin for foundation.

Facial oil before makeup. Facial oil before applying foundation
Can oil be used when applying foundation? How? For what? Which? In what order? What is the final effect? There are many legends and conflicting opinions surrounding this issue, let’s figure it out. I will highlight this aspect separately, because on the one hand, oil is one of the stages of preparing the skin for makeup, and on the other hand, it is a means for applying makeup. Let's consider all methods of application.
Mix oil with foundation
- Option 1: drop a little foundation onto your hand, add a couple of drops of facial oil, mix and apply the mixture to the skin as usual.
- Option 2: Apply foundation or corrector to the face with strokes, drop a couple of drops of oil onto a damp cosmetic sponge, and blend.
What is the benefit of adding oil to tone?
- If you want to lighten, dilute the matte finish of the foundation, make the coating lighter, more radiant, more natural.
- If you want easier application, distribution, shading of the foundation.
My opinion on this matter. I haven’t tried it, and I’m not going to try it. It is better to choose a foundation that is comfortable, suitable in color and consistency, than to dance with tambourines around an unsuitable one.
Apply oil before makeup
Together with the rest of your skincare cosmetics: cream, mask, serum, toner, you don’t have to apply everything on yourself at once. The main thing is to achieve the main goal: remove peeling, redness, nourish the skin, moisturize. If one product is enough for this, great, if more is needed, ok.
My opinion on this matter. Oil as a preliminary part of care is the most reasonable option, if you take into account two important conditions:
- The oil is chosen that is suitable specifically for your skin type, and this is not an easy task. Wide variety, hundreds of varieties of pure mono-oils, regardless of manufacturer. But there are also ready-made mixtures from different brands. With such a choice, it’s easy to get confused. If you have found “your” oil, I can only congratulate you. Personally, I haven't found it yet. How to determine that a particular oil is right for you? The criterion is extremely simple: it is comfortable to live with, you rub a couple of drops into the skin and they are absorbed without a trace, leaving behind only a feeling of softness and moisture. If this consistency creates a film on the face, an oily sheen, a feeling of stickiness and disgust, then there is no need to use such a product anymore. Guided by this rule, you should choose all other skincare products. And it would be a mistake to think that face oil is only for very dry skin to remove dryness and flaking. A suitable bottle can be selected for absolutely any skin type and for any defect.
- Even with the perfect oil, it takes time to absorb; allow at least 10 minutes for this process and only then apply the next product.
Final stage
A multi-layered “cake” of cosmetics has already formed on the face, and still this is not the end. Brief program: apply concealer under your eyes and make a couple of dotted strokes in those places where “it’s not ok yet.” It is important to remember that concealer is applied after foundation, and not vice versa. You can do without a final spot concealer, but under the eyes - only this product is necessary, because concealers are mainly designed for makeup of the area under the eyes. The shade should be chosen very carefully - to match the color of the skin, or better yet, a tone lighter.
And at the end of the day, optional but decorative touches: powder, blush, contouring (sculpting), highlighters and bronzers. I will not consider these procedures in detail - because this is already a topic for a separate article, and we wanted to consider the question of what to apply before foundation. And they seem to have considered it.
What conclusions can be drawn? The fewer funds from this list we need, the better. Both for our wallet and for our nerves. Therefore, if there is an opportunity to remove at least something from this list, remove it. In an ideal universe, a girl applies CC cream to her bare face and goes out to decorate the world. When in the mood, her cosmetic chain looks a little more complicated: cleanser, moisturizing cream, foundation, powder. Any means are good if you understand what their role is.
Preparing your face for professional makeup. Proper preparation of the skin for makeup: procedure
Useful tips on lifting makeup were provided by our regular reader Olga, and perhaps they will be useful to you too.
The first thing that is important in lifting makeup is that it makes the face younger and fresher. It is necessary to hide age-related changes as much as possible, visually tighten the skin of the face and add freshness. It is for this reason that special attention is paid to preparing the skin in order to take advantage of all the possibilities of makeup.
Lifting skin care products
On adult skin, makeup is easily noticeable, because it is revealed by small peelings and uneven texture, so it is very important to take cleansing your facial skin very seriously. I recommend, if possible, exfoliating it with a soft scrub so that the top layer becomes smoother and fresher, and then the makeup will go on smoother.
Be sure to use a moisturizing toner and face cream, but it is better to leave the serum overnight. Foundations on top of active serums very often slide off. And remember: in lifting care, any open area of skin is also your face. Do not skimp on the cream on your neck, décolleté and hands.
A basic set of tools includes:
- A facial scrub, preferably moisturizing and nourishing the skin.
A moisturizing toner that must be used morning and evening.
Serum as a night skin care product.
Day and night cream, separately for the face, neck, décolleté and eyes.
Makeup setting spray.
In daily care, special attention should be paid to the area around the eyes. If possible, use moisturizing patches with collagen or hyaluronic acid, then apply moisturizer to the skin around the eyes.
Preparing the skin for lifting makeup
Spray a moisturizing spray or makeup fixative onto your face and massage it into the skin, patting it with your palms. Do not let the spray dry freely on the skin, but rather drive it in, otherwise it will dry out along with the skin itself. The moisturizing spray slightly tightens the pores and gives a slight lifting effect, and the vitamins, minerals and moisturizers it contains make the top layer of skin smoother and more elastic.
In addition, the spray reduces flaking and unevenness, and foundation will apply in a thinner and more invisible layer. This is a very important point that is not recommended to be ignored, since the quality and aesthetics of further makeup directly depends on it.
The main problem of adult skin is uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine and deep wrinkles. It is impossible to completely get rid of changes in relief through makeup, but it is quite possible to divert attention from them.
Use smoothing primers (radiant) all over your face. This will make your skin look and feel smoother. Also apply a special highlighting primer to the area around the eyes. It smoothes out the appearance of microwrinkles, illuminates dark circles and allows you to apply less concealer.
Features of using concealers and correctors
Accumulated fatigue always affects the eyes and the skin around them first. Dark circles, bags, wrinkles make the face look older. However, if you first correct the problem area around the eyes, you will not have to tint your face much.
Choose liquid and light concealers, preferably even with reflective particles. Dense ones contain a lot of powder and will be more noticeable on skin with signs of age-related changes. The best option is a Vand concealer with a brush or a liquid concealer with an applicator like a lip gloss. Choose light pink shades of concealer to neutralize darkening of the skin around the eyes and highlight the center of the face.
Apply concealer with your fingertips or a brush. Start from the sides of the bridge of the nose and the inner corners of the eyes and carefully blend along the lower and upper eyelids.
If necessary, apply a slightly thicker, lighter concealer locally using a small brush to the darkest areas of the face, such as along the lower lash line. You can lightly lower the highlight along the lower eyelid, and this will help disguise the swelling under the eyes.
Using concealer, draw the outer corner of your eye towards your temples and this will visually lift the outer corner. Next, carefully blend the edges of the concealer with a soft brush.
Additionally, apply light concealer to the area around the wings of the nose and the dimple on the chin to reduce the formed depressions in this area. Conceal pigment spots, if any (see section “Concealing problem areas”) and soften the applied correctors with a damp sponge or brush.
Define the contour of your lips and draw out the corners towards your cheekbones to create a more defined and lifted lip shape. “Sad” corners of the lips make age-related facial changes even more noticeable. Lightly blend the applied correctors so that they do not catch your eye.

A CC primer with a colored tint can hide age spots. For pronounced pores, you should pay attention to a primer in the form of a cream-mousse.
Base before makeup. Basic mistakes when applying foundation for make-up
Before applying the base to the face, girls should remember that mistakes in this matter can lead to a significant deterioration in the result, namely, the short-lasting durability of the cosmetics or its uneven distribution over the surface of the skin. So, in order to avoid this, representatives of the fair sex need to know the following facts:
Do not apply the base too thickly
- Under no circumstances should the foundation be applied too thickly, as it should not be absorbed into the thickness of the skin like a cream. So, it will remain on the surface, which will lead to uneven application of makeup and, accordingly, to a poor-quality result.
- When the face is moisturized with cream, but the girl does not allow it to be absorbed properly, the makeup base placed on top of it will interact with the fatty substance, which will deprive it of the properties intended by the manufacturer.
- On the contrary, when a woman greatly skimps on foundation and some areas of the face are left unattended, then, accordingly, makeup will fit worse on these untreated areas and the face will be stained with spots.
- In no case should you try to change your face tone, remove visible defects or redness using just a base, because, firstly, there will be an excess of it, the makeup will lie unevenly, and secondly, these problem areas will still remain visible .
Note! Here, ladies can be advised to go for facial cleansing more often or carry out preventive procedures that heal the skin from the inside, and do not mask the already lost quality of the skin.
- Makeup bases are usually formulated only for thick skin and cannot be used on delicate areas such as eyelids or under-eye areas. For such areas, cosmetologists advise using concealers.
- Most often, makeup base, if, of course, it is of high quality, consists of natural ingredients, which entails its limited shelf life. This means that once the bottle of the substance has been opened, it should be used for up to 12 months from the start of use. Otherwise, not only will it lose its active ingredients, but it can also become dangerous to healthy skin, causing irritation after application.
Important! If a girl does not use decorative cosmetics very often, she should buy bottles with base in small quantities, changing the brand from time to time and experimenting with the result. Thus, it often happens that a constantly used product begins to be absorbed by the skin, and the desired effect may be weakened or completely lost.
Final elimination of defects
Have you completed all the preparatory procedures? Let's see what happened. Is your skin smooth, nourished, even? You did a great job - now you can pick up a tube of foundation. No? Or is there any doubt that all this beauty will last long? It’s sad, of course, but everything can be fixed. The next stage is the “foundation”.
If there is a suspicion that this area will soon become shiny, dryness will appear here again, there are too many blackheads here, there is a pigment spot here, and here the acne has not gone away... that means we are “building a foundation.” It's time to start applying your makeup base. Or the base. Or color correctors - the name may be different, but the purpose of the product is the same - to disguise imperfections before applying foundation. I will not give recommendations on which bases to select, because recommending brands in this case is a thankless task. I will only say that the basics can be found for any shortcoming.
You also need to take into account that CC and BB creams are also considered bases, but they are self-sufficient, after which you do not need to apply foundation. And if you are lucky and don’t need to mask anything, then a regular transparent silicone base without effects will increase the durability of your makeup. If the day promises to be long, then with a colorless “classic” base the foundation will last longer, and there will be no need to refresh the tone.

If a layer of makeup on your face looks not like a second skin, but like a mask, the tone is patchy and quickly slides off - most likely, you are not properly preparing for applying makeup. Correct errors by following our step-by-step instructions.
1
Peeling
If you still haven't gotten into the habit of exfoliating your skin 1-2 times a week, it's time to improve the situation. By ignoring exfoliation, you force your skin to deal with the layer of dead skin cells on its own, which is why your makeup lies in an uneven layer. Remove them with a scrub or chemical peeling procedure (however, this cannot be done before October). You can choose gentle formulas suitable for daily use. They will make your skin smooth and glowing. One way or another, exfoliation is a must do in the process of preparing the skin for makeup.
2
Moisturizing and massage
The most important product in preparing to apply makeup is moisturizer. Dry skin needs a cream containing oils, while lighter textures are suitable for oily skin. It is also worth choosing a product with SPF so that it both cares for the skin and protects it from the harmful effects of the sun. Apply the cream with light massage movements so that it is absorbed faster.
3
Caring for the skin around the eyes
Delicate and sensitive skin around the eyes is known to require special care. Choose a product by carefully reading the label. Creams with vitamin C help protect the skin from free radicals, versions with vitamin K eliminate dark circles under the eyes, and those with coenzyme Q10 heal the skin by improving metabolism. Apply them with patting movements with your fingertips to improve microcirculation.
4
Primer application
Use a primer so that your makeup not only fits perfectly, but also stays on your skin for as long as possible. Many of these products have the added bonus of hydrating your skin. And some also highlight it, helping to create a fashionable glow effect. Pay attention to the composition: some primers contain silicone, which only interacts well with oil-based products. If your moisturizer and foundation are water-based, a primer with silicone will not work for you.
5
Using lip balm
The final touch in the process of preparing the skin for makeup is lip balm. Apply it in advance, even before you start correcting skin tone, eye and eyebrow makeup. While you apply makeup, the balm will be absorbed and soften the skin of your lips so that you can then apply lipstick to it.
Purpose
With regular use of foundation, the skin loses its elasticity, takes on a sallow complexion, and pores become clogged. Oil-based cosmetic primers provide protection and make foundation easier to apply. Primer oil performs the following functions:
- evens out the terrain;
- eliminates roughness;
- gives smoothness;
- disguises small wrinkles and defects;
- gives a healthy glow;
- softens and moisturizes the skin.
After applying the oil, the skin is ready for sculpting and toning. Creams, liquid foundations and powders blend well. Immediately after applying the primer, the skin is transformed. If we are talking about daytime makeup, then there is no need to use heavy and dense cosmetics.
Makeup primer oil. Types of primers
There are primers for different skin types:
- For dry skin types, soft and creamy primers are optimal. They are denser and more delicate, and thanks to their thick texture they improve the microrelief of dry skin, moisturize it and mask wrinkles;
Makeup base for oily skin
- for mature facial skin with noticeable wrinkles, you need a foundation containing proteins that not only eliminate external imperfections, but also improve the condition of the epidermis as a whole;
- For oily faces, liquid and gel products are needed. Makeup base for combination skin thanks to its light texture creates a smooth surface for makeup. In this case, the primer prevents possible problems and at the same time masks existing flaws.
Makeup base for oily skin with enlarged pores
Owners of oily skin with enlarged pores need to have a base with a mattifying formula in their arsenal of cosmetics. The problem with this type of skin is that the sebaceous glands work too actively, and their secretions can enter into chemical reactions with the components of cosmetics, changing their composition and color.
Primers for oily skin types contain components that absorb sebum, which eliminates the need to constantly use powder and mattifying wipes. In addition, they significantly tighten pores and protect the skin from bacteria, which in turn can cause acne.
Note! Combination skin tends to have oily areas in the T-zone. Therefore, when applying makeup foundation, you should treat this area with particular care.
There are also:
- silicone primers that fill pores and wrinkles, creating a perfectly smooth surface. They are suitable for both normal and oily skin;
- reflective primers containing microscopic particles with a light-diffusing texture, thanks to which the face is literally illuminated from the inside. Cool tones are good for fair skin, dark tones are good for tanned and dark skin;
- Mineral primers are a versatile option for those with oily skin. They mattify and absorb sebaceous secretions.
Silicone primer fills pores and wrinkles well
Primers are also selected according to the base tone:
- pink ones remove yellowness;
- green ones mask redness.
How to use
Moisturizers are suitable for dry skin types, and mattifying ones for oily skin types. In case of severe defects, corrective compositions are recommended that fill pits, post-acne, and wrinkles. If you have porous skin, gel-like products will help out. It is best to watch makeup artists at work to understand how to use primer correctly. An important condition before applying the product is that the skin must be previously cleansed and moisturized.
- Before primer, it is recommended to treat aging skin with micellar water.
- The oil is distributed using a pre-moistened sponge or beauty blender. The movement is carried out from the eyes towards the cheeks, from the wings of the nose to the ears.
- Areas of redness are treated with a green composition, and dark circles under the eyes can be removed using pink and yellow tones.
- After applying the primer, wait 5-10 minutes and then apply the foundation.
tea tree
Tea tree oil, familiar to all fans of Lush, who use it in their popular Tea Tree Water. The antiseptic properties of tea tree oil cannot be compared, perhaps, with almost any other - this is the best remedy for drying out a nasty pimple overnight, or even in a couple of hours. It perfectly removes redness and helps fight oily skin without drying it out. It can be used either spot-on or as an additive to used products aimed at combating imperfections or acne. The main thing to remember is that, unlike most other oils, it is extremely toxic when taken orally, so you should not experiment, but leave it on the shelf with jars.
Margot Marron
One of the most effective essential oils. It has unique antiseptic, antifungal and bactericidal properties, and therefore is actively used both for healing cuts and burns, and for treating acne-prone skin. Despite the pronounced smell and quick effect, the oil is not allergenic and its application to the skin in its pure form does not lead to irritation or burns of the skin and mucous membranes.

pros
Minuses
For massage
In massage, hydrophilic oil is used mainly for the areas:
- Faces;
- Necks;
- Neckline.
It is advisable to carry out the procedure during the period of washing or bathing procedures. The skin should be steamed and most of the pores should be open. Distribute the emulsion evenly over the treated area and massage gently for 10-15 minutes. Move strictly along the massage lines.
Avocado
In the “most underrated oil” category, avocado oil will definitely win - there’s not as much hype around it as there is around coconut oil, but it’s definitely not inferior to it. Unlike many other oils, it is obtained not from the seeds, but from the pulp. It contains vitamins A, E, antioxidants and much more - in practice this means that if it suits you, then you can use it for everything: wash, moisturize, face, body and hair - it is truly a universal oil. Besides the fact that it can help improve skin and lighten scars and help mature skin, you can safely cook with it to reap all the nutritional benefits of avocados.
Margot Marron
Avocado oil is similar in composition to sebum. It promotes the production of collagen, has excellent restorative properties and is suitable for washing, however, it is not recommended for application to the skin as a treatment in its pure form, since it is quite heavy - it is better to mix it with other oils.
Compound
Hydrophilic oil consists of 3 components:
- Basic cosmetic oil - up to 90% of the total volume. It can be regular sunflower, but more often almond, grape, coconut, jojoba or others;
- Polysorbate or other emulsifier - a surfactant that turns the product into milk (emulsion);
- Skincare components—additional ingredients added to cosmetics—are not required, but can provide hydration, nutrition, or better cleansing of the skin.
The composition sometimes includes purified or rose water, as well as vitamin complexes, fruit acids and plant extracts.
Indications for use
Reasons to use hydrophilic oil:
- Hard water. When washing, the skin becomes very dry, sometimes peeling and irritation appears. An emulsifier will improve the situation slightly;
- Dry and untidy skin. The product solves the problem of dehydration and also removes external signs of fatigue;
- Waterproof cosmetics. This is a good product for removing stubborn makeup;
- Enlarged pores. Oil helps dissolve dirt, including sebaceous plugs and blackheads. In addition, there is an opinion that the hydrophilic composition helps to narrow pores.
If the skin is too sensitive, oily or dry, then care cannot be limited to oil. Be sure to wash your face immediately after the main cleansing step.
Reviews
Nadezhda: I tried Kiehl's oil and fell in love with this product. Suitable for oily skin. The smell is citrus. The oil softens and tones. The texture is light and absorbs instantly. I use it mainly in winter so that the skin does not flake and looks well-groomed and uniform. The price is steep, but the result is impressive.
Elena: I bought Turnaround Revitalizing Treatment Oil. The product is good, but it hits the budget. I switched to something else – Kiss Beauty. It works worse, but the savings are obvious. If financial possibilities allow, then I will return to Clinique products.
Alina: I use NYX cosmetics. I used to buy Angel Veil Skin. Now I use Professional Makeup. The primer makes combination skin uniform, tightens pores, and evens out tone. I apply it with my hands and it gets absorbed in 10 minutes.
As you know, you don't have to be a professional makeup artist to apply makeup with professional precision. It’s enough to know the secrets that every second master of brushes and palettes uses. Luckily, makeup artists are people who are happy to share life hacks and new techniques that can bring harmony to your relationship with your makeup bag. We have collected the ten most popular tricks that will pleasantly surprise you.
Transparent powder
Transparent powder without tint is not only an excellent makeup fixer, but also a multi-functional dry texture. Monica Blunder, makeup artist for Jessica Alba and Amanda Seyfried, admits to using it as dry shampoo or powdering her lashes between two coats of mascara to make them look fuller.
Lip balm
You may not have realized it until now, but your favorite balm is more than just a moisturizer. Take a cue from makeup artist Daniel Martin and use it as a highlighter with a natural glow. In addition, a balm without a tint can turn any dry blush into a creamy one, which is especially important in winter.
Moisturizing cream
To give your skin a natural, subtle glow, use every makeup artist's favorite trick: simply add moisturizer to your product. This works with foundation, concealer, eye shadow and blush. But do not forget that moisturizer will definitely “dilute” the shade, making it less pigmented.
Eyeshadow
This trick was actively used by makeup artists at New York Fashion Week: to add a velvety texture to your lips, put a little blush or warm shade on your finger and apply it over your regular lipstick. Easier than using long-lasting matte lipstick that dries out instantly. Plus, much more interesting.
Facial mist
Although fashion show makeup artists are quite confident that matte makeup will very soon become an undisputed trend, wet makeup and strobing are still at the peak of popularity. The problem is that glowing skin treacherously highlights pimples and flaking, which prevents you from achieving the perfect result. Here's a tip - use a mist spray for your face. Spray it on your skin after applying foundation and concealer - this will help smooth out imperfections.
Base oil
Cold weather is the number one enemy of dry skin. Even those of us who constantly struggle with dryness and flaking face problems during the winter. Makeup artist Edward Cruz says that in such cases, he uses a base oil and a BeautyBlender, which makes applying oil to problem areas much easier.
Bronzer
A tanning product may not seem like the most obvious candidate for the title of “best dual-action product,” but makeup artists are willing to give it a chance. Cariss Ferreri, for example, notes that if you use bronzer as eyeshadow, you will get the perfect nude smoky eyes.
Red lipstick
Rita Ora always looks flawless, so you can take her makeup artist Katie Jeng's word for it. If you don't have a peach concealer to cover up dark circles under your eyes, Jeng recommends reaching for... carrot lipstick. Mix it with your regular concealer to get the desired shade. Sounds weird? Oh yeah. Are we ready to try? Undoubtedly!
Eyebrow wax
Lip care is taking on completely new forms. Makeup artists often use eyebrow wax in a pencil for moisturizing - of course, colorless. It nourishes your lips perfectly and works as well as a primer if you want to apply a bright shade.
Is the primer water-based or oil-based?
Check whether your base is oil or water based. You want to choose a primer that has the same base as your foundation so they complement each other.
Also pay attention to whether it contains silicone, as it can sometimes interact poorly with the foundation base and you may end up with blemishes on your face.
When purchasing a primer, first ask for a sample and try it on your hand. Once it's dry, apply some of your foundation. If the base stays smooth, then your foundation and primer can work together.
Some people with sensitive skin have allergic reactions to silicone.
