Benzyl benzoate for demodicosis - instructions, reviews, composition

The effective drug “Benzyl benzoate” is used for demodicosis, as it has the ability to destroy parasites, lice and ticks. Demodicosis is the main indication for the use of this drug. This skin disease is characterized by rashes on the face, back and other parts of the body and is caused by Demodex mites.

When treating with Benzyl Benzoate, it is extremely important to be careful; the medication should be used strictly in accordance with the official instructions and only after consultation with a specialized doctor.

Directions for use and doses

Benzyl benzoate ointment is used topically. When treating scabies and pityriasis versicolor, before using the drug, patients should take a shower with soap and hot water to remove scales and crusts, rinse off the soap thoroughly and dry with a towel.

The ointment is applied in a thin, even layer to the surface of the body from the neck to the soles and lightly rubbed into the skin; first treat the left and right arms, then the legs and torso (the ointment should not be applied to the face and mucous membranes). After treatment, hands should not be washed for 3 hours. In some cases, after the applied ointment has dried (usually after 1 hour), it is recommended to apply a second layer of the drug.

After treatment is completed, patients put on clean underwear and change bedding. After 24-48 hours, patients take a shower and change their linen and bedding again. As a rule, a single application of benzyl benzoate ointment is sufficient. However, if necessary, the treatment is repeated, and the course of treatment can last 7-10 days.

Note: Repeated treatment with ointment should be carried out only when live mites and new scabies are detected, since itching and other symptoms of infestation may persist for several weeks due to a state of physiological hypersensitivity caused by the presence of dead parasites.

When treating scabies in children under 5 years of age, Benzyl benzoate ointment should be diluted immediately before use with warm boiled water (30-35 °C) in a 1:1 ratio and mixed until a homogeneous emulsion is formed. Treatment, as a rule, should be carried out without a preliminary warm bath 2 times with an interval of 12 hours.

When treating “Norwegian scabies”, before using Benzyl benzoate ointment, it is necessary to first cleanse the skin of crusts using keratolytic agents (for example, Karboderm-Darnitsa cream containing 10% urea. When treating rosacea and demodicosis, Benzyl benzoate ointment is lightly rubbed into the skin of the face, protecting the eyes from contact with the drug. The duration of treatment is determined by the dynamics of skin cleansing, relief of the inflammatory process, and cessation of itching.

When treating head lice, the drug is applied to the hair and scalp, lightly rubbing into the skin; the head is tied with a scarf. After 30 minutes, the drug is washed off with running water and the hair is rinsed with a warm 5% vinegar solution. After completing the described procedure, the hair is washed with soap or shampoo and combed with a fine comb to remove nits.

The effectiveness of the treatment is determined after a day and, if necessary, the procedure is repeated. For lice pubis, the ointment is rubbed into the skin of the pubis, abdomen, inguinal folds and inner thighs.

Features of the pathological process

Normally, the human body is home to a huge number of microorganisms that are considered conditionally pathogenic. This also includes mites of the genus Demodex. While the body's defenses are working at full strength, the parasite does not make itself felt. But as soon as the immune system weakens, the mite begins to multiply rapidly. The risk group primarily includes weakened people who have suffered from infectious diseases. Lack of sleep, poor diet, constant emotional stress - all this can also lead to the development of demodicosis.

Inflammatory processes of the skin are the main manifestation of demodicosis. Pimples begin to appear on the face, which hurt and itch. Often a bacterial infection is associated with the inflamed area. In this case, it is necessary to carry out complex therapy, including the use of antibiotics and special antiparasitic agents.

Patients often begin treatment on their own - using antibacterial ointments and antiseptics. Sometimes the skin condition can be temporarily improved, but unpleasant symptoms return over time. If proper therapy is not started immediately, there is a risk of developing a chronic form of the disease. This will require longer and more expensive treatment.

The first thing to do when a rash appears on your face is to consult a qualified dermatologist. After a series of studies, the doctor will prescribe appropriate treatment. If it is possible to determine that you have had to deal with demodicosis, benzyl benzoate is often prescribed.

Benzyl benzoate emulsion copes well with demodicosis.

Interaction with other drugs

No pharmacological interaction of Benzyl benzoate ointment with other drugs has been identified, however, like all antiparasitic agents, it is not recommended to be used simultaneously with other external medications. Local or systemic use of corticosteroids may help to eliminate or reduce the manifestation of some symptoms (itching, hyperemia, etc.) while the invasion persists, so the use of such drugs should be avoided during treatment with Benzyl benzoate ointment.

Cetylpyridinium chloride, which is part of the drug as an antimicrobial preservative and emulsifier, interacts with anionic surfactants, in particular with soaps. This can lead to loss of the bacteriostatic properties of the drug and its coagulation.

Composition, release forms and properties

The drug is produced in 2 forms:

  • An emulsion, which is a mass of homogeneous consistency, white in color and with a mild specific aroma. Available in bottles of 50, 100 or 200 g. The emulsion, intended for surface application, contains the active component benzyl benzoate and additional components - household soap, distilled water and emulsion wax.
  • The ointment is a homogeneous mass, white in color and with a peculiar aroma, placed in aluminum tubes or jars. The components of Benzyl Benzoate ointment are food additive E330 and octadecanoic acid, laundry soap and phenylmethyl ester of benzoic acid.

The drug kills larvae and adult ticks, but does not affect eggs.

The medicine in question has an antiparasitic effect and is intended for external treatment of the skin. It demonstrates the greatest activity against ticks and lice.

When using “Benzyl benzoate”, a bacteriostatic effect is noted, which means a temporary suppression of the ability of microorganisms to reproduce in the human body.

Side effect

When applying benzyl benzoate ointment topically, no adverse reactions are usually observed. However, when applying the drug, a burning sensation may occur, which goes away with further use of the ointment. In rare cases, people with sensitive skin may experience local skin reactions (burning or itching, redness or dryness of the skin area treated with the drug), as well as allergic skin reactions. If the above side effects do not go away on their own, the use of the drug must be discontinued.

Basic information about the drug

Benzylbenzoate is a drug belonging to the group of anti-pediculosis drugs. The medicine is available in the form of an ointment and an emulsion. The active ingredient is a substance of the same name - benzyl benzoate. Additionally, the emulsion includes purified water, laundry soap, and emulsion wax. The ointment also includes the elements macrogol and stearic acid.

Benzyl benzoate is intended for external use only. The instructions indicate that the main component has a negative effect on scabies mites, lice, and Demodex parasites.

The drug contributes to the death of both adults and larvae. The medicine begins to act almost immediately. Within half an hour the first ticks die.

Those individuals that managed to survive cannot fully reproduce. The product shows really high efficiency. Benzyl benzoate is absorbed only into the upper layers of the epidermis and does not penetrate into the systemic bloodstream.

Contraindications and side effects

The ointment should not be rubbed into the skin if the patient has an individual intolerance to one or more active ingredients. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor. The drug is contraindicated for most patients. You cannot treat demodicosis with ointment if the patient is a child (under 6 years old). The drug is not used if there are pustular formations or wounds on the patient’s skin.

Side effects are extremely rare when used topically. The likelihood of their occurrence increases in the case of medication applications. The patient may feel a burning sensation, but it disappears on its own, without special influence, so you should not stop using the medicine.

If a person has very sensitive skin, there is a risk of local reactions: this may be dryness of the upper layers of the epidermis, their redness, an itchy sensation immediately after treating the affected areas.

The occurrence of allergic reactions is possible. When side effects do not disappear on their own, you must stop taking the medication and contact a medical facility for qualified help. Most often, the appearance of an allergic reaction of the body (hives, rash, redness) is provoked by neglecting the instructions for the medication. You cannot increase the dosage, change it yourself, or violate the duration of the therapeutic course. Treatment is adjusted only by the attending physician.

When taking the ointment orally, disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract occur. In this case, it is necessary to rinse the stomach and take absorbents. Since local use of the drug does not threaten the absorption of benzyl benzoate components into the patient’s blood, cases of overdose are not observed.

Compound

You can purchase the medicine in 2 forms that differ in structure:

  • ointment;
  • emulsion.

The active component is the substance of the same name. The dosage of benzyl benzoate in 1 g of ointment is 200 mg. The same amount is contained in 1 g of solution. The drug in different dosage forms is quite concentrated. It contains 20% of the active component of the total amount of the substance. The ointment is available in 25 g tubes. The emulsion can be purchased in 200 g bottles.

Contraindications to the use of benzyl benzoate

How to treat with benzyl benzoate? It is necessary to evaluate the risks and benefits of using the drug, which should be done by a qualified physician. For the treatment of demodex with benzyl benzoate, the following should be considered:

Allergy

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to benzyl benzoate or any other medicines. Also report any other types of allergies to food, dyes, preservatives, etc.

There is no specific information on comparing the effect of using benzyl benzoate against demodicosis in children and in representatives of other age groups.

Pregnancy

Benzyl benzoate ointment is contraindicated for pregnant women.

Other medical disorders

The concurrent presence of other medical diseases may affect the use of benzyl benzoate. Tell your doctor about the development of other diseases, especially those associated with skin inflammation, because... benzyl benzoate may make the condition worse.

Usage

The medicine in the form of an ointment is intended for local use. During the development of the disease, a person feels itching, burning of the skin, irritation, and redness of the skin surface. For the face, the drug should be used carefully, as it is quite aggressive. The product kills microorganisms within 7-32 minutes. When the ointment gets inside the parasites, the substance quickly accumulates, which contributes to the consistent destruction of all ticks.

The ointment and emulsion are made on the basis of the potent preservative cetylpyridinium chloride. You can start therapy only after visiting a doctor who will prescribe the remedy. It is important to remember the high degree of sensitivity of the skin on the face.

Rub the ointment in with light touches. All movements are performed in a circle. The procedures are carried out until the symptoms of the disease completely disappear. But the emulsion is applied in the evening or after lunch. Before treatment, be sure to wash your face. To do this, use warm water and soap.

Before application, shake the bottle and apply the drug in small quantities only to the affected areas of the skin. The next day, be sure to wash your face with water.

During treatment with Benzyl benzoate ointment, it is forbidden to interrupt the course, since there is a high probability of relapse. After consultation with a doctor, in most cases complex therapy is indicated. The complex includes the following tools:

  1. Vitamins.
  2. Immunomodulator.
  3. Products with moisturizing properties.
  4. Acaricidal medicine.

Complete healing may take approximately 6-12 weeks.
