Is it possible to wash your face with soap and how to choose the best

Everyone's attitude towards soap as a facial cleanser is different. Some believe that it should be used when washing your face every day, while others argue that soap dries out the skin of the face and thereby has a negative effect on it.

The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle: by using soap when washing your face, you can achieve both a beneficial effect and a harmful effect. This will depend on a number of factors, such as: skin type, type of product, its composition and others.

Properties and Features

A facial cleanser should cleanse your skin effectively. The thing is that the sebaceous and sweat glands on the face work in enhanced mode, so the skin requires regular and high-quality cleansing.

Soap can cope with this task. But unlike conventional products (hand soap, body soap), which almost exclusively contain alkaline components, the facial product has a lower content of aggressive chemicals.

Soap for washing the face has a set of softening and (or) nutritional properties due to the herbal ingredients included in its composition. This could be, for example, palm or coconut oil. In most cases, vegetable oils are the basis of such soaps as an alternative to lye.

Natural soaps for facial care are often enriched with special substances that can minimize the effects of hard water, which is beneficial for any skin type. These are the same vegetable oils (coconut, almond, palm). The range also includes medicinal products that can help get rid of blackheads, pimples and other problems.

Washing with soap or how to ruin your skin in 28 days and then restore it in 3 months

As part of my personal project to reduce the amount of generated waste, including cosmetic waste, I decided to switch from washing with liquid products (in particular, gels) to solid ones (popularly called soap). The plan was good, but, as you can see from the title of the post, everything went completely differently than I expected.

For many years, the mainstay of my cleansing routine was the Avene Cleanance cleansing gel. Despite the fact that I constantly tried something new, I always returned to it. But, as they say, a bad head gives no rest to your hands, so my new ideas and hobbies resulted in an irrepressible desire to switch to washing with solid products. Initially, I set my sights on the famous black soap Erno Laszlo

, which has helped a huge number of people improve the condition of their skin.
But for the purity of the experiment, I added two more bars to the cart: Ahava
with sea salt and
SebaMed
for problem skin. Actually, the story will be about how 4 months of washing with these products passed.

Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar

About 10 years ago, when I just started reading Kosmetista and other beauty communities, washing using the Erno Laszlo method was a real hit. The reviews were quite contradictory: on some people it literally cleaned out all the pores and made the skin look babyish, while on others it clogged the pores, causing an oily sheen and small rashes. At that time, soap and all other care components were too expensive for me, so there was no opportunity to try. And now, almost a decade later, the stars aligned and I finally purchased the famous black soap of the world famous Hungarian doctor Laszlo. I wish I didn't do this...

So, the famous black soap based on sea mud promises to transform tired, dull skin, restoring its shine, and also reduce inflammation. In addition to the stated sea mud, the soap also contains charcoal powder and oak moss extract. Paper packaging.

The composition contains a fragrance, which is completely incomprehensible to me personally, because it still smells like dirt.

The second big problem with this soap is the tambourine dance ritual when using it. There is already a post on Cosmetist with a detailed description of everything that needs to be done to wash your face. In short:

  • before each use, and this is recommended to be done 2 times a day, you need to take a shower or bath to steam and prepare your facial skin
  • To wash your face properly, you need to rinse your face with water 30 times.
  • before washing with soap, you need to use oil (of course, from the same brand), and then several other care items.

At the same time, no one writes that the soap is black, the foam is gray, even with the usual method of use it flies all over the tiles and plumbing fixtures, and with the 30 splash technique, you then have to wash the entire bathroom. Thus, before you have time to finish your morning routine, it’s time to start your evening routine.

But the biggest problem with this product is that none of it works for me! I could have agreed to all these “three swats - two swats” if there had been a declared result (what can’t you do for beautiful and healthy skin?), but I didn’t see it. Moreover, after a month of use, this soap killed my skin so much that I am still treating the consequences.

At first, I decided to try washing my face only with soap (without oil), since I have long had a rather strained relationship with oils. In addition to the above-mentioned inconveniences with time wasted and droplets flying all over the bathroom, I immediately felt how much this soap dries out the skin. Already in the process of washing my face, I could literally hear my skin creaking under my fingers. Immediately after washing my face, I wanted to dip my face in a bowl of moisturizer.

In addition, I somehow very quickly began to have quite large black dots appear here and there. Not to say that this was something too new and atypical for me, but they were 2-3 times larger than my usual open comedones.

Then I decided that I was doing everything wrong and definitely need to start washing my face with oil. I didn’t buy the recommended Erno Laszlo oil (after all, the brand’s price tag is not conducive to blindly ordering something without testing), but I found a miniature of DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, which I originally planned to use with this soap (but still I wanted to try it separately first).

So, I started applying oil to dry skin, massaging it, and then washing it off with soap. It’s interesting that I liked the part with oil, and it fit so perfectly into the idea of not using discs (they were often used together with micellar water), that I even left this step in my care as the first stage of cleansing.

As for soap, then, alas, it did not get any better. Almost every morning I discovered new huge black dots on my skin, then rashes appeared, and closed comedones began to form along the lower jaw line. But since many in their reviews noted that there may be a stage of deterioration, I continued to use it. It is known that on average the skin renews itself in 25-30 days, and it is during this period of time that you can see whether the care product is working. I lasted 28 days.

I could not withstand more than 4 weeks of this torment. I had the feeling that every pore on my face was clogged: some in the form of an open comedone, and some closed. I saw them visually, I felt them under my fingers when I touched my face. In addition, the skin itself became somehow dull and tired, as if I had been working in a coal mine for a month. In a word, the situation was critical.

I didn’t specifically take a “before” photo, but I found a photo of my skin (on the left) a week before I started using the soap. On the right you can see my face after a month of using soap, as well as cleaning done by a cosmetologist (I simply couldn’t cope on my own). That is, it was even worse!

We do not take into account skin color, since there was clearly different lighting, but in general you can appreciate how much sadder the situation is. In the photo below, I zoomed in on part of the chin, where you can see the relief from closed comedones, black dots everywhere, even along the contour of the lips. And this, I repeat, is after cleaning, where everything large was removed, and also taking into account the use of acids overnight. I’m even afraid to imagine what would have happened without them.

Wanting to make sure that it was the soap and not my inability to use it, I tried using it several more times at different times. The result is always the same: dry gray skin, clogged pores and inflammation.

Unfortunately, despite my high interest in the brand due to its creator and history associated with Hungary, this soap became the worst product

not only of the past year, but
of the entire decade
. To be honest, I don’t remember that there was another similar product that would combine all the “best” things: high price, complex use pattern, catastrophic consequences on the skin.

Sodium Palmate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Water (Aqua/Eau), Silt (Dead Sea Mud), Charcoal Powder, Parfum (Fragrance), Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) Extract, Benzyl Cinnamate, Benzyl Benzoate, CI 77489 (Iron Oxides), CI 77289 (Chromium Hydroxide Green), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide).

I still feel the consequences of using this miracle soap. Behind me are several cleanings, a course of microdermabrasion, and a completely revised approach to care. However, from this experience I was able to draw good conclusions:

  • cleansing oil really has a place in my skincare routine
  • Regular visits to a cosmetologist do much more than it might seem at first glance.

Current skin condition.
The difference along the lower jaw line is especially noticeable with Sebamed Clear Face Cleansing Bar

When it became clear that my skin needed to be saved, I started washing my face with a solid Sebamed product. It is somewhat incorrect to call it soap, since it is essentially not a product of alkalization of oils.

It’s good that when ordering Erno Laszlo soap, I decided to add a couple more items from other categories in order to try different options and then form a final opinion. It would be a shame to put an end to all bar (solid) cleansing products based on one bad experience.

I have not come across the Sebamed brand before. It turned out that this is a German pharmacy brand with quite reasonable prices.

The cleansing tile, let’s call it that, is designed specifically for problem skin and promises to fight rashes, comedones and skin imperfections. It contains no soap, promises a neutral pH, antibacterial properties, hydration due to lecithin, vitamins and amino acids, and fights free radicals with vitamin E.

And how pleasant it is to use this product! There are no three-volume instructions or complicated usage patterns, a pleasant fresh aroma, no dirt scattered throughout the bathroom, and good results on the skin.

The product foams minimally, and rather turns into a slightly soapy milk rather than foam. It does not tighten or dry out the skin, although it does not provide moisture. With constant use, my pores do not become clogged, my skin does not become dehydrated, and I rarely break out. I can’t say that it helps get rid of existing problems, since I had it done by a cosmetologist, but it is very effective in preventing the appearance of new ones. To be honest, this is a real find

, and completely random and unexpected. It seems to me that this particular product will become a zero-waste (it has only one cardboard package) replacement for my favorite Avene Cleanance gel.

AHAVA Moisturizing Salt Soap

I added soap from the Israeli brand Ahava to my cart out of pure curiosity. The fact is that it is stated as moisturizing, and this should be done due to salt (Dead Sea, of course). I couldn’t imagine how soap or salt could moisturize, so I really wanted to check it out.

In practice, this soap turned out to be a complete average in my selection today:

  • Average price between Erno Laszlo and Sebamed
  • average in aroma - has a good perfume scent, not particularly rich, but not as pleasant for me as Sebamed
  • it gives a nice thick creamy foam, soft and elastic, which is pleasant to massage over the skin.

Unfortunately, the effect is also average. No, it doesn’t do all the terrible things that black soap does, but it dries out the skin, even though it promised the opposite. Overall, when using this product, I felt like I was washing my face with a regular cosmetic soap, something like Dove. In addition, when compared with Sebamed, it does not have a pronounced preventive effect on acne, but no one promised this.

Overall, I feel like this is a completely average product that I use to wash my hands and body, but it's not suitable for my face due to the dryness it causes.

Results

When I started the adventure of washing my face with solid products, I suspected that something might not go according to plan, but I didn’t think it would be this bad. Ultimately, I experienced a sharp deterioration in the condition of my skin, which is why I found a good cosmetologist and procedures that suited me, discovered a completely new brand and an excellent inexpensive product for washing with a minimum of packaging. I won’t say that I liked all the points listed above, but there were more pros than cons.

Have you tried any of these products or brands? Are you considering the option of washing with solid products? And what product was the most nightmare for you in 2020?

Increase

Effect on the skin

Facial soap should perform several basic functions. These include:

  • cleansing;
  • disinfection;
  • prevention of skin inflammation;
  • hydration;
  • nutrition and maintaining natural acid-base balance;

A regular cleanser can be used to cleanse the skin of the face, but its action is sometimes very aggressive. The fact is that the natural lipid layer necessary for the health and beauty of the skin is destroyed by alkaline substances.

As a result, not only the epidermis of the face suffers, but also the nails and skin of the hands.

The more sensitive your skin is, the more dangerous a regular alkaline product can be for it. Dry epidermis needs the additional use of emollients containing oils (almond, cocoa, shea butter) and vitamins.

With the help of the right soap, those with oily skin can not only get rid of unpleasant greasiness and shine, but also regulate the functioning of the sebaceous glands. If the skin is normal or has a mixed type, then it is preferable to use a natural product with a neutral ph.

You can wash your face with soap if there are obvious problems: inflammation, cracks, acne, but you should use a product with an antibacterial composition in liquid or solid form from time to time. It is not recommended to use this soap every day. Moreover, the fight against the problem should be supplemented by the use of other means: lotions, special creams and others.

The effect of soap on the epidermis of the face is explained at the level of chemical reactions. The alkali and acid react to form glycerol and sodium salt. Thanks to them, any contaminants dissolve, and when washed off, dead pathogenic microorganisms are removed along with the dirt. Glycerin helps retain much-needed moisture.

How can you tell if a skin cleanser contains soap?

In some cases, even in expensive foams and gels, manufacturers include soap and its derivatives. You can calculate its presence in a liquid product by carefully looking at the composition.

Any combinations that contain the ending “at” and sodium with potassium (for example, “sodium cocoate”) indicate the presence of a substance obtained as a result of the reaction of fat with alkali - that is, soap. It is not recommended for those with dry skin to buy such cosmetics.

The need to wash your face with soap

Whether you should wash your face with soap is a controversial question. On the one hand, the product really cleans well, but on the other, it can be harmful: as a result of use, the natural slightly acidic background of the epidermis may be disrupted. Alkali thins the protective layer, making the skin vulnerable, which bacteria will certainly take advantage of.

There is a myth that it is even necessary to wash your face with soap containing alkali, since this component helps to cope with acne. Indeed, alkali can remove germs, dirt, sweat, dissolve fat and get rid of dead epidermal cells. This process occurs during the interaction of the main component with water.

But it is worth considering that you cannot completely get rid of sebum, as excessive dryness can lead to the formation of acne. The acidic environment that occurs during sebum secretion protects against microbes. That is, if you are prone to acne, it is recommended to use soap with an antibacterial effect, containing, for example, chamomile or calendula extract, but not alkali.

Can soap be used daily? It depends on your skin type:

  • For those with oily skin, it is permissible to wash your face with soap once a day, for example, in the evening;
  • if the epidermis is of a normal type, experts advise using facial soap no more than 2-3 times a week with the obligatory subsequent use of additional products to soften and moisturize;
  • Experts often ban washing with soap for people with sensitive and dry skin. They are recommended to wash their face with warm water and dermatological foams;

Remember: excessive use of an incorrectly selected skincare product can lead to increased skin susceptibility to the effects of wind, temperature, heat and other external factors.

Washing your face with soap is strictly not recommended if:

  • this procedure was contraindicated according to the dermatologist's opinion:
  • there are numerous pimples, ulcers, microcracks, peeling on the face;
  • skin is too sensitive;
  • recently had a major cosmetic procedure performed;
  • there is rosacea;
  • significant wrinkles are observed;

The conclusion should be drawn as follows: you can wash your face with soap, but it is not necessary. And if you want active use, you should carefully select a product suitable for your skin type.

Do not dry

Avoid drying out your skin. The use of aggressive soap leads to disruption of its protective fat layer, which makes the skin dry and can cause peeling and cracking. In addition, dry skin is less elastic - it can stretch greatly without restoring its shape later. As a result, deep wrinkles form. Frequent use of alcohol-containing products also leads to excessive drying of the skin. After all, alcohol absorbs water very well - and not only from the air, but also from the skin. In addition, washing with very hot water
. It irritates the skin, actually causing a slight burn, and also dissolves and washes away more sebum.

Compound

Many manufacturers have abandoned the use of aggressive components due to the popularization of natural products. Cosmetic companies enrich the composition of soap with products of natural origin. But not all companies show such responsibility, and therefore it is important to learn how to independently analyze the composition and choose only a safe cleaning product.

Table 1. What soap can consist of, and to what extent the “chemistry” will not cause harm.

Component Action Safety
Surfactants (surfactants) Removal and breakdown of fat Safe at low concentrations
Salts (oleic, lauric, potassium or sodium) Antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal Safe in balanced antibacterial soap.
Preservatives (sorbic acid, methylparaben) Extends the shelf life of cosmetic products In small quantities they are not harmful. Present in minimal content only in natural products
Flavorings (perfume combinations, solvents, essential oils) Gives a smell Can be dangerous only if you are individually intolerant to the component
Plant extracts (extracts of calendula, viburnum, chamomile, aloe and others) Nourishes the epidermis and makes it healthier Useful for any type of skin in the absence of allergies to a specific substance
Dyes (titanium dioxide, additives CI 15510, E171 and others) Gives the product a certain color Dermatologically safe
Antiseptics (boric acid, tar and others) Disinfect, accelerate the healing of minor damage to the epidermis) Not dangerous for any type of skin.
Emollients (glycerin, lanolin) Soften the skin and maintain the protective layer Not suitable for oily skin

Please note: the composition stated on the packaging may differ from the real one, so it is recommended to give preference to products that have proven themselves and have a certificate of conformity and safety.

At what age can you wear makeup?

The charitable organization Renfrew Center Foundation, together with Harris Interactive, conducted a survey among girls from 8 to 18 years old. It turned out that 58% of girls regularly use decorative cosmetics, more than 50% of them started wearing makeup at the age of 11-13, and 15% tried makeup for the first time before the age of 8.

“Products for children have an age marking on the packaging, you can use it as a guide. But decorative cosmetics contain pigments, fragrances and preservatives that can cause allergic reactions. Therefore, we use special children’s products no earlier than 3 years, provided that there are no skin problems. “Adult” cosmetics can be used from the age of 12,” emphasizes Nina Sergeeva, dermatovenerologist at the Fantasy clinic.

Early use of decorative products harms the body: this is confirmed by a study by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley. They took urine tests from girls who regularly used cosmetics. After which they asked the participants in the experiment to stop using it for a week.

The results showed that the concentration of chemicals in the urine of the subjects (phthalates, methylparabens, propylparabens, etc.) decreased by 45.4% compared to the initial value.

Kinds

There are several types of detergents that, one way or another, are used in matters of facial care.

Economic

Laundry soap is used to effectively remove stains from fabrics and to disinfect surfaces and premises. Many people are convinced that you can wash your face with laundry soap. Dermatologists do not agree with them.

Medical use of the drug is considered justified only in certain situations, for example, as a primary treatment of an animal bite site before vaccination with a rabies antidote, that is, as first aid.

Experts do not recommend washing your face with a household bar, since the product contains fats of animal origin. It also contains calcium chloride, which can be very drying.

Degtyarnoe

Tar soap is so called due to the presence of birch tar in an amount of at least 10%. Unlike laundry soap, this type of soap contains components that have a beneficial effect on facial skin and, first of all, problematic skin. These include:

  • phytoncides;
  • xylene
  • phenol;
  • resins;
  • toluene;
  • organic acids;

“Tar” foams well, contains oils, nourishes and moisturizes. It can be a budget alternative to expensive peeling in a beauty salon.

In addition to the fact that the product perfectly cleanses, it stimulates blood supply to the upper layers of the skin of the face. This improves color, improves health, and prevents premature aging.

You should think about buying tar soap if you have wounds and injuries, eczema, dermatological diseases, areas of increased pigmentation, and burns.

In people with dry skin, tar can cause cracks and thinning of the lipid membrane, followed by peeling. Not recommended for those whose skin is very sensitive and prone to contact allergies. Dermatologists often ban the use of the product by pregnant and lactating women.

Systematic use is recommended for people with oily epidermis.

Children's

Face soap "Children's" is traditionally considered useful and harmless. It does not contain parabens, there are no perfumes or emulsifiers. This composition is optimal for sensitive baby skin.

However, experts see the benefit for adults as rather dubious.

The children's remedy does not have any special therapeutic effects. But its undoubted advantage lies in the ability to obtain soft and abundant foam. If you need to rid your face of a layer of makeup and dust, “Baby” liquid soap or a solid bar are quite suitable, but, alas, it is useless for improving health and solving dermatological problems.

Neutral Ph is a plus, but the abundance of glycerin is a relative minus. Therefore, people with oily skin on their face should not frequently wash their face with soap intended for children's hygiene.

For peeling

Washing your face with soap is a controversial concept. This includes both regular washing and some cosmetic procedures at home. One of these types of procedures is soap peeling. It does not injure the epidermis, does not cause irritation or redness. Obviously, deep cleaning will not occur, but superficial cleaning will be carried out.

Soap peeling activates local metabolic processes, exfoliates dead cells, and tidies up the functioning of the sebaceous glands. The procedure is not suitable for daily washing. The frequency is again determined by the type of skin on the face.

For oily skin, it is permissible to carry out 2-3 peels per week, for normal skin - 1-2, for combination skin - once, and for sensitive skin - individually, usually no more than once a week.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline soap is considered a beauty novelty that came to us from Asian countries. There, such facial soap has been used for a long time and has proven itself to be excellent. Black or brown tourmaline soap foam is included in skin care masks. This product is also widely used for hair and skin care.

Factory or handmade tourmaline products always contain tiny crystals of tourmaline, a natural mineral. It is believed to be of volcanic origin.

The product is recommended for washing for owners of all types of epidermis. The soap does not have a distinct odor, the composition is as natural as possible, and therefore the product is suitable even for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin.

Natural

Natural soap is suitable for everyone, with the exception of individual intolerance to certain components contained in soap. Most often, manufacturers add olive, coconut, palm or ricin oils to such products. You can use this product every day without the risk of injury to the outer lipid layer.

Natural soap rarely has a bright color; usually the shades are close to pastel. It does not have a pungent odor. The oil content is at the level of 2-3%. To wash your face, you can use both natural factory soap and homemade handmade soap.

It is recommended to apply the product to the initially cleansed epidermis with light massage movements. Experts advise washing your face with soap as often as usual, but not more than once a day. The cost of such a product is higher, but natural Aleppo or Turkish olive soap will bring much more benefits.

Is it possible to use my mother's cosmetic bag?

Decorative products for adults cause allergies, redness and rashes in the child. The concentration of fragrances, preservatives and pigmenting substances in them is higher than in children's cosmetics: this is necessary for the durability of makeup. Some foundations and concealers

“Such decorative cosmetics are designed for the adaptive capabilities of fully formed skin. Adults have a thicker stratum corneum, the skin is less sensitive, and it contains enough enzymes and lipids. Adult cosmetics have slightly different tasks: they must be long-lasting, so they contain bright pigments and have a denser texture,” says Sergeeva.

Mom’s cosmetic bag also contains waterproof products based on wax, alcohol and silicone. To remove them, you have to rub your face: this traumatizes children's skin, causing irritation, dryness and microcracks.

Cosmetics and makeup brushes are a source of viruses and bacteria. Using the same mascara, eyeliner or lipstick with the mother, the child becomes infected with a staphylococcal infection, herpes or conjunctivitis.

Choosing the Right Facial Soap

To choose the right facial product, you need to know the key rules:

  • solid forms are more alkaline and are not suitable for sensitive skin;
  • antiseptic liquid product is more suitable for washing problem skin;
  • Glycerin products are not always useful for those with oily epidermis, as they create an additional layer of protection that prevents the normal functioning of the pores.

Always carefully read the composition and purpose of the product according to your specific skin type. Do not choose soap for washing your face based only on its beautiful packaging or pleasant smell, because these indicators do not at all indicate the quality of the product.

The most important

Clean skin is not sterile - it is home to millions of beneficial bacteria that help it function properly.
Excessive use of antibacterial soap upsets the balance of beneficial microflora. And aggressive detergents dry out the skin and lead to premature aging. Therefore, you need to wash twice a day, but without trying to wash off absolutely everything from her. Tags:
