(photo: @shaninamshaik) Salon care is wonderful, but, unfortunately, there is not always a free window in your schedule to run to a cosmetologist for some super-effective express procedure with which you can put your face in order. It’s good that in this case, the beauty market offers thousands of different fabric masks that replace professional care. InStyle compiled a ranking of three of its favorites.

Types of fabric face masks
Face masks consist of a base and impregnation. The canvas or paper is impregnated with medicinal and restorative agents. The product prepared in this way is tightly applied to the skin of the face and left for some time. Beneficial substances pass from the mask to the skin and penetrate inside, providing a beneficial effect.
The frame of the mask can be:
- Natural cellulose is a hypoallergenic material that adheres well to the skin
- Biocellulose is a high-quality, although expensive, material that adheres well to the body, increasing the effectiveness of the mask
- Hydrogel
- Foil paper
Non-woven material is used in budget masks. It does not fit tightly to the body, which makes it difficult to achieve a good result.
The following is used as impregnation:
- Hyaluronate
- Minerals
- Acids
- Connective protein
- Beneficial bacteria
- Extracts of medicinal plants
- Vitamins
Fabric patterns
You don't always have gauze or bandage of the right size at hand. Instead, you can use simple fabric: chintz, linen, calico or cotton fabric. Even an ordinary pillowcase or stylish scarf will do. Three headbands are enough for an eight-hour working day: upon returning home, it will be enough to wash them and iron them with an iron heated to maximum temperature.
Transfer to cardboard and cut out the pattern shown here according to your desired size (men's, women's, children's, or toddler). Please note: the drawing is only half of the mask; subsequently the pattern will need to be sewn in the middle with the second identical part.
Before you start sewing, scald the material with boiling water and iron it: it will be softer and more comfortable to work with.
Step-by-step work process:
1. Cut out two parts of the product. Fold the fabric of your choice in half, with the right side facing inward. Place a paper template on top and trace. Don't forget to leave a 1 cm allowance on the seams. To sew one mask you will need to cut two of these parts.
2. Now the parts need to be sewn together in the central part: fasten them with pins so that they do not come apart. You can sew by machine or by hand.
3. Please note: when sewing a rounded edge, you need to make small longitudinal cuts up to the seam so that the product takes the desired shape and does not bulge.
4. Do the same with the second part. Now fold both pieces with the seams facing out so that they match, pin and sew the long sides, leaving the sides untouched.
5. Turn the mask right side out, straighten and iron.
6. To make it fit better, you can stitch from the front side along the long sides.
7. Run a blanket stitch along the sides, turn them inside out and sew.
8. Prepare two pieces of elastic, 20 cm long, and thread it through the side seams. 9. Sew the ends of the elastic or tie it in a knot, then hide the junction in the side seam.
The Ministry of Health recommends wearing a factory-made mask for no more than two hours, and a gauze or fabric mask for no more than three. Further use of the latter is permissible only if they are heat treated. To carry it out, it is enough to wash the cotton-gauze mask well and iron it with a hot iron.
How to use it correctly
Before using the mask, you should read the instructions for its use. You can take a shower wearing a biocellulose-based mask. It itself will not become limp from water, but the beneficial substances will easily pass into the steamed skin through open pores.
Attention! If after the first session of use you do not notice a positive effect, you should not repeat the procedure. Perhaps the reason is that the mask is not suitable for your skin type.
How to prepare your skin for a sheet mask
Before applying the mask, remove decorative cosmetics. Then thoroughly cleanse the skin with tonic. Use the same products that are used before applying a regular mask.
Applying a mask
Take out the mask and apply it to the entire face. Smooth out the edges so that no folds form anywhere. The mask should cover the entire face except the eyes and lips, for which there are slits. If the mask has a collar for the neck area, fix it. If not, collect the remaining serum from the bag and distribute it over the neck.
Facial care can be combined with treatments for the skin around the eyes. Special patches are used for this. Top best patches for puffiness under the eyes.

Tips for choosing
Since one mask cannot suit absolutely everyone, everyone chooses a product based on their individual characteristics and needs.
First of all, you need to decide which components you need to find in the product, depending on the situation.
So, for dry skin, the ideal solution would be moisturizing masks containing hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help saturate the skin with the necessary moisture. However, it is extremely important that there is no alcohol among the components of such products - it will only dry out the skin even more.
To get rid of a gray complexion or unwanted pigmentation, products with vitamin C, niacinamide, arbutin and pearl powder are suitable. They will allow you to return a radiant appearance, as they have a beneficial effect on the functioning of melanin in the skin.
Sensitive or irritated skin can benefit from aloe vera, tea tree and anti-inflammatory herbs.
For oily types, you should give preference to zinc oxide, clay, green tea, malic acid or cotton, which have a drying effect.
To combat the first wrinkles, you should choose masks enriched with nutrients and containing collagen, bio-gold or vitamin B12 as the main component.
To achieve an anti-aging effect, products containing fatty acids, coenzyme Q12, peptides and adenosine are suitable. They have a more intensive effect on the condition of the skin, coping with wrinkles and sagging.
Model with folds and pocket for liner
The mask with a pocket is so easy to make that even a beginner who knows how to hold a needle in his hands can handle it, using the correct “back needle” stitch, even without a machine.
The pattern is a simple fabric rectangle.
You just need to fold the fabric in a certain way and secure the elastic. Since one of the main criteria for a mask is ease of breathing, for sewing choose fabrics that allow air to pass through well. A beautiful cotton material or knitwear is best suited for this purpose.
Simple MK online:
1. Cut out a rectangular template 21x19 cm from paper. Mark the places of future folds on it in advance, retreating 5.5 cm from the top and bottom.
2. Wash and iron the selected fabric, and cut out two rectangles from it according to the pattern. Mark the fold lines.
3. Fold each piece in half horizontally, wrong side in, and iron, forming a central fold.
4. Grasp the fabric on both sides where you have the top mark and slide it down, bringing the mark to the fold and creating a fold.
5. Now you need to sweep the fold or iron it straight away. Repeat the process with the second tag.
6. Turn the workpiece over so that the wrong side is on top.
7. Fold the top part 7 mm, iron and stitch. If the material is loose, then make another fold. Do the same with the second workpiece.
8. Prepare two pieces of elastic, 18 cm long, and turn the first piece right side up.
9. Place the elastic on the edge so that on the folded side it is flush with the edge, and on the bottom - about 5-7 mm before reaching it, since in the future there will be a seam.
10. Sew the edges, securing the folds together with the elastic. Try it on to make sure the size fits your measurements.
11. Place the second workpiece on the resulting part with the front side inward. Make sure the folded sides match. Sew three sides, leaving a centimeter from the edge. Make sure that the elastic bands do not get into the seams. Leave the part with the folded edges unstitched. The corners can be trimmed a little to avoid compacting the mask in these places and giving it an anatomical shape.
12. Turn the product inside out and straighten it, iron it, and mark 5 cm on the bottom sides.
13. Sew the edges from one mark to the next, leaving the center bottom part unstitched: the photo shows where the hole should be located.
This valve is designed for an antibacterial replacement filter: you can make an insert from a piece of gauze or bandage and place it inside the mask. The insert will provide additional protection.
